As a freelancer who regularly writes for several websites, I’m always taking notes on the fly. For this, I have turned to a universal app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac: Drafts.

Many writing apps, including some of the best writing apps for Mac, have flooded the mobile app market. However, Drafts is the one I use because of its impressive speed, which makes it effortless to keep track of your latest idea or task.
The app’s innovative features create a frictionless workflow. All content gets stored in a single, easily accessible inbox, eliminating the need for upfront folder organization. This lets me maintain my creative flow, quickly jotting down ideas and outlines on my iPhone. I then write the bulk of the work in the Drafts for Mac app, using tags and flags, and archive later to organize and easily retrieve my past projects.
Arrange Mode is a personal favorite. This feature lets you quickly sort groups of text to different parts of the document. By tapping the up or down arrows, you can move individual lines or paragraphs as blocks of text. Similarly, deleting blocks of text takes only a few seconds, which makes it a perfect tool for outlining and editing a project.
There’s also the app’s unique Action system. With only a tap, you can send your note to its next destination, whether it’s through email, messages, or reminders. In-app, you can also quickly send the notes to Dropbox, Obsidian, or another text-based app. You can also explore and install community-created custom actions, such as a one-step way to post to your favorite social network, integrate with Airtable, and more.
Finally, although Drafts always starts with a blank page, there are several ways to customize the experience to suit your needs. Changing the theme, font, or editor’s view is a tap away. You can also customize the rows of options you see and the Markdown tools to make your writing process even smoother. The ability to launch automated workflows, set up workspaces for different projects, and advanced search tools are also available at your disposal.

For anyone currently writing with a full-featured word processing tool, you might have some concerns about switching to something like Drafts. Change is never easy after all.

As those ideas start to gather, it’s incredibly easy to send them off to whatever service you choose for later use.
Finally, you’re probably wondering about the cost. Drafts offers a full-featured free version that includes features like capturing, editing, syncing, and more basic options. Only after you’ve been using Drafts for a while and are comfortable with it should you consider purchasing a low-cost subscription. Features like themes, custom workspaces, and more advanced automations are added when purchasing a subscription. Drafts will cost you nothing if you decide these advanced tools are for you.
