With the Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, and the Mi 8 SE all recently being announced at an event in China, Xiaomi users also learned of MIUI 10 being released for several devices. The new MIUI 10 has many features, such as a completely redesigned lock screen, quick settings, and a bunch of other UI improvements.
While MIUI 10 is only being released on a few devices, it hasn’t become publicly available yet. However, recent ROM leaks enable us to install MIUI 10 on several Xiaomi devices. These devices are:
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
- Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S
- Xiaomi Mi 5
- Xiaomi Mi 6
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro
- Xiaomi Mi Note 2
So if you own one of the above Xiaomi devices and want to give a leaked version of the latest MIUI 10 a try, this guide will walk you through installing it on your Xiaomi device.
Note: This guide involves unlocking the bootloader. If your device isn’t already unlocked, you need to go through the Xiaomi bootloader unlock request process. Be warned that unlocking the bootloader will perform a factory reset on your device, so make sure you backup all of your important data!

- The first step is to install the ADB tools on your computer, if you don’t already have them.
- Next enable USB debugging on your Xiami device – go into Settings > About Phone > tap ‘Build Number’ 7 times until Developer Mode is activated, then go to Settings > Developer Options > enable USB Debugging.
- Next you want to download the MIUI 10 rom specific for your device, and the Google apps package, then transfer them to your phone via USB connection.
- Now reboot your Xiaomi device to the bootloader by turning off the phone, then hold down the Power + Volume Down buttons together, until you see the Bootloader screen.
- Now you want to boot TWRP on your Xiaomi device – download the TWRP for your Xiaomi device to your ADB folder (so you should have for example C:\ADB Tools\twrp.zip)
- Next open an ADB command window (hold Shift + right click inside the main ADB folder on your PC, and choose “Open a Command Window Here”)
- Connect your Xiaomi device to your PC via USB, and type into the ADB command terminal: adb devices
- This should return your device’s serial number – you may have to accept a pairing dialogue on your Xiaomi’s screen, then run the command again.
- If ADB properly recognized your Xiaomi, then type into the ADB window: fastboot boot /path/to/twrp_img (replace path/to/twrp.img with where you actually saved the TWRP.img, for example C:\ADB Tools\TWRP.img)
- When your Xiaomi boots into TWRP’s main menu, tap on “Wipe” and then “Swipe to Factory Reset”. If you’re on the MIUI 9 China Stable edition ROM, this is likely an unnecessary step, but for any other global ROM you need to do this.
- Now in TWRP main menu go to “Install” and then choose the MIUI 10 ROM you downloaded, and swipe to flash it. Repeat this step with the Google Apps package.
- Once both have been flashed, tap “Reboot System” and after a sufficient waiting period (you just loaded a new ROM, let your phone do its thing) you should be in the new MIUI 10.
