Windows 10 provides a good collection of fonts for user needs. The default fonts that come with Windows 10 are limited and specific. Users can try to find new fonts on the internet and download it to their system. However, Windows 10 also provides the Font Provider setting that helps the user in determining the availability of new fonts. If the fonts are available to the providers, then the Windows 10 may download font data if needed to format or render text.
By enabling this setting, Windows 10 will periodically query to determine whether a new font catalog is available. This may not be as perfect as finding a font online by yourself, but it is still useful for users that are looking for new cool fonts. The Font Providers are Adobe, Microsoft typography team, and a few other companies. Now, this setting can be enabled only through the Local Group Policy Editor; however, the Group Policy Editor is not available on Windows 10 Home Edition. That is why we are including the Registry Editor method for those who don’t have the Group Policy Editor.
Enabling Font Providers through the Local Group Policy Editor
We can enable the Font Providers setting to allow the Windows to download fonts and font catalog data from an online font provider. This setting is already available in Group Policy Editor and you can change it easily. If you have the Local Group Policy Editor on your system, then follow the below steps to configure the setting:
- Press Windows + R keys together to open a Run dialog. Then, type “gpedit.msc” in the box and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
Note: Choose Yes option for UAC (User Account Control) prompt.
- Navigate to the following location in the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Fonts
- Double-click on the Enable Font Providers setting to open it. Now modify the toggle from Not Configured to Enabled option. Then, click the Apply/Ok button to apply changes.
- This will enable the Font Provider setting.
Enabling Font Providers through Registry Editor
The same setting can be applied in the Registry Editor. However, the value for this setting may not be available already in Registry Editor and the user will need to create the value manually. Creating a key/value in Registry Editor is nothing to be worried about as it can be done very easily by following the below steps:
- Hold the Windows key and press R to open a Run dialog. Type “regedit” in the box and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. Also, press Yes for UAC (User Account Control) prompt.
- In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
- Create new value by right-clicking on the right pane and choosing New > DWORD (32-bit Value) option. Name the new value as “EnableFontProviders“.
- Double-click on the newly created value and change the Value data to “1“. Click the Ok button to apply changes.
- This will enable the font providers through the Registry Editor.
