What Causes BSOD when idle In windows 10

The most common cause for PCs blue screening when idle in Windows 10 is some sort of issue with a hardware driver.

Updating or reinstalling the hardware driver will usually resolve this issue

Other issues could include

  • Faulty Hardware
  • Virus
  • Corrupt Files

How many fixes which I will go through below, updating or reinstalling your device drivers will mostly resolve this issue, so start with that first then move on to the other fixes if needed.

Update Device Drivers

The first thing we need to do is try to identify which hardware is causing the issue, when your machine crashes to a blue screen of death take a look if you can see any file names on the screen.

In the example below I can see the filename vdodk.sys, this tells me that the file vdodk.sys cause the crash.

We now need to find out what hardware uses this file which we can do with a simple Google search. I have found out that the file vdodk.sys is used by a video card so we should look at upgrading the video card driver first.

To update your hardware drivers in Windows 10 follow these steps

  1. Go to your computers manufacturers website and download the latest driver for the hardware that is causing the blue screen of death
  2. Open up device manager, expand display adaptor and right-click on the hardware and click update driver software
  3. Browse to the location where you saved the drivers to
  4. Click ok
  5. Follow the prompts to install the updated driver
  6. Driver has been updated restart your machine

Update System BIOS

If updating system drivers did not fix this issue the next thing we should try is to update the BIOS.

To update the BIOS on your machine follow these steps

  1. Go to your manufacturers website
  2. Search for your computer model in the support section
  3. Download the BIOS update
  4. Double click on the BIOS update to launch the application
  5. Follow the prompts to install the update
  6. Restart your machine

Install latest Windows updates

It is always a good idea to install the latest updates from Microsoft, one of the updates could fix the root cause causing the blue screen of death on your machine.

To install the latest Windows updates on your machine do the following

  1. Click Start > Settings
  2. Click Update & Security
  3. Click Windows Update
  4. Click check for updates
  5. Follow the prompts to download and install the latest updates
