Google has recently announced that they are now giving more priority to websites with HTTPS encryption. The hope, of course, is that it will make people feel safer using Google. Do you feel more secure using Google placing a higher priority on HTTPS sites?
HTTPS is a protocol that is supposed to lead to a more secure communication and is becoming more widely used on the Internet. It protects against man-in-the-middle attacks and is geared towards preventing eavesdropping, tampering, and forging. It is the hope that users will feel more secure knowing that there is less of a chance of their communication being interrupted by someone other than the intended recipient.
Google is acknowledging that security has always been a top priority for them. They believe that “browsing the web should be a private experience between the user and the website, and must not be subject to eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle attacks, or data modification.” Because of this, they announced that they are adjusting their indexing so that it will crawl HTTPS pages first before the HTTP equivalents.
Does all of this make you feel any safer using Google knowing that it’s doing its best to send you to secure sites? Or do you just not trust anything on Google no matter what they do?
