Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped

The Android Operating System is far from perfect as it has quite a few flaws, one of the most common and irritating ones being the fact that many Android applications tend to crash and force stop unexpectedly, producing the error message “Unfortunately, (app name) has stopped”.

This issue can be quite annoying, especially when it keeps on happening.

The following are the methods that have proven to be able to get rid of the “Unfortunately, (app name) has stopped” issue:

Method 1: Clear the device’s cache

  1. Boot the device into Recovery Mode, the methods for doing which vary from one device to the other.
  2. Use the Volume Rocker to highlight the “wipe cache partition option and the Power button to select it.Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  3. Once done, highlight and select the reboot system nowFix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped

Method 2: Clear the data for the affected app

  1. Go to SettingsFix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  2. Navigate to the device’s Application Manager.Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  3. Look for and tap on the affected app.Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  4. Tap on Force stop.Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  5. Tap on Clear data and confirm the action.

Method 3: Uninstall the affected app’s updates

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to the device’s Application Manager.
  3. Look for and tap on the affected app.
  4. Press Uninstall updates.
  5. Run the app.

Note: This method works best for Google apps such as YouTube and Chrome and pre-installed apps such as S Health.

Method 4: Update the app to its latest version

  1. Open the Google Play Store.Fix: Unfortunately, (App Name) Has Stopped
  2. Search for and open the entry for the affected app.
  3. Tap Update and wait for the app to be updated.
  4. Run the app

Method 5: Uninstall the app and then reinstall it

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to the device’s Application Manager.
  3. Look for and tap on the affected app.
  4. Press Uninstall, confirm the action, and wait for the app to be deleted.
  5. Reinstall the app from the Play Store.

Method 6: Reset the device to factory settings

  1. Boot the device into Recovery Mode, the methods for doing which vary from one device to the other.
  2. Use the Volume rocker to highlight “wipe data/factory reset” and the Power button to select it.
  3. On the next screen, select yes – erase all user data.
  4. Wait for the device to be reset to factory settings.
  5. When returned to the main menu of Recovery Mode, select reboot system now, and then follow the onscreen startup instructions.

Note: This method should only and only be used as a last resort when none of the other methods work as resetting an Android device to factory settings deletes any and all not-backed-up data on the internal memory of the device.
