If you're using the SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) to move your local shared files to SharePoint Online and the migration job fails with the error "Temporary storage space on your local computer is very low," continue reading below to fix the issue.
The SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) is a great free solution for migrating your local files to SharePoint Online. However, in some cases, migration tasks may fail for various reasons, such as permissions issues, network issues, insufficient storage space to package the files, etc.
To troubleshoot SharePoint file migration issues, you need to download the "failure report" of the Migration task in a zip file and extract the csv files it contains. Then open the following two (2) files to investigate the cause of the issue.
- FatalError_R1.csv
- ItemFailureReport_R1.csv
In this guide, I will show a solution to fix the following common SMTP errors that have the same cause: the temporary working folder on your local machine is too small for files being migrated.
- "Temporary storage on your local computer is too low.","ACTION_PAUSE","0x02040012" which is reported in file FatalError_R1.csv
- "Scan File Failure:Not enough disk space to pack the file","0x01110012" which is reported in file ItemFailureReport_R1.csv
How to FIX SharePoint Migration Errors: "Temporary storage on your local computer is too low – 0x02040012" & "Not enough disk space to pack the file – 0x01110012".
The SharePoint Migration Tool temporary working folder is a local directory on the computer from which the SharePoint Migration agent is running, where the following are stored:
- Temporary copies of the files being migrated.
- Upload cache chunks before uploading to SharePoint Online.
- Diagnostic logs.
This temporary working folder is stored in the user's roaming profile in the following path:
- %appdata%\Microsoft\MigrationToolStorage\SPMigration
However, if the C:\ drive does not have enough free space, the migration job fails. To fix the problem, you must either free up space on the C: drive or use a different drive with enough free space to store the migration logs and temporary copies of the files to be migrated.
To set another another working folder in SharePoint Migration Tool, do the following:
Step 1. Delete "MigrationToolStorage" folder.
1. Open Explorer and navigate to this path:
- C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft
2. Delete the "MigrationToolStorage" folder and continue to next step, or move the folder to a different drive with with enough free space and skip to step-3.

Step 2. Create a new "MigrationToolStorage" folder on another drive with enough free space.
On another drive with enough free space, create a new folder and name it "MigrationToolStorage" or "MigrationToolStorageLogs" for easier identification.
Step 3. Change the Temporary Working Folder In SharePoint Migration Agent.
1. Sign in to your Microsoft 365 Admin Center using your administrator credentials.
2. In the left-navigation pane click on Show All and then select SharePoint.
3. In SharePoint admin center, select Migration on the left.
4. In 'Migration Manager' options, click View Tasks under File Shares.

5. Select the Agents tab and then Edit the migration agent.

6. Click Edit on the Working folder.

7. Type the full path of the new folder your created on the other drive (eg. the drive "G:" in this example) and click Validate.

8. Click Save to apply the new setting.

9. Go to the Migrations tab, select the migration job that failed previously, and click Run.

That's it! Which method worked for you?
