Is there anything more interesting on than statistics? Not the school type, the Internet type. Following your own activity is fascinating, so it's no wonder that tools that track your Gmail statistics, blog statistics and even Facebook statistics are so popular. But what about "you" statistics? Or shall we say, a stats selfie?
No, I'm not talking about your height, weight and eye-color. I'm sure you can figure those out on your own. I'm talking about the way you surf the Web every day, the websites you visit and your surfing habits. This is not about a specific website or a specific service, it's about everything you do in your browser. And it's more interesting than you might think.
Surfkollen: Get Your Surf Selfie
Surfkollen is a Swedish add-on for either Firefox or Chrome. It analyzes the last 7 days of your activity, and presents the results on a slick, colorful graph. Unfortunately, Surfkollen can only analyze the last 7 days, so the insights you can get from at it at the moment are a bit limited. If you're anything like me, though, a single week can easily present your typical surfing habits.
After installing the add-on (no restart required on Firefox), you're in business.
The first thing you get is the number of pages you've visited in the past week. This number is placed on a scale from Low to Extreme, Extreme being somewhere around 5,000 pages. As you can see, I've had a pretty average week.
The stats report is not just a list of numbers and graphs. It's designed with beautiful scroll effects, so even though there's not a whole lot of information here, viewing it is quite an experience.
Surfkollen now breaks your number of pages down and shows you the three websites you've visited most often this week, complete with the number of times you visited each. In case you're curious, my third most visited website is Facebook.
The last part of your report is a day-by-day break of your surfing habits, showing you which day you were most active on. You don't get number of pages visited per day, but you do get a percentage for each day.
What Can You Do With It?
If you keep scrolling down after this graph, Surfkollen will offer to show you your "Surf Selfie". This is your full report on a single page.
From here you can share your report in various ways. When sharing on Facebook or Twitter, note that the default text is actually in Swedish. I translated it using Google Translate and it doesn't say anything offensive, but you still might want to change it (unless you're Swedish, of course!).
You can also get a link for your report to share, and even download it to your computer as an image. When choosing this option, however, the file will save with a random name and without a file extension, which might create a problem for you when trying to open it. The best thing to do is to add a ".png" suffix to your file, which solves the problem.
