A file comparison tool shows differences between two (or more) files and helps you merge them. These macOS apps each offer a visual interface to inspect and manage file changes.
1. Kaleidoscope
Unlike many other comparison tools, Kaleidoscope is a macOS-only app, giving it a native feel and OS-integration that others lack.
On startup, Kaleidoscope walks you through its features, with a visual guide to show each of them off. It also includes sample files for comparison, and you can use these to quickly explore the app and its interface.
Kaleidoscope has features for diffs, merges, image comparison and merging, and folder comparisons. If you’re a developer, you’ll appreciate the app’s integration with git. This includes support for changeset exploration, full file history, and easy branch comparison.

2. Helix P4Merge
Helix P4V is a cross-platform, enterprise ecosystem of version control software. Its P4Merge app—P4Merge for Diff & Merge—is a free download that focuses on file comparisons.
P4Merge displays files side-by-side, connecting related parts of each file with colored areas, much like a Sankey Diagram. This is a common approach to side-by-side comparison that helps you identify significant parts of each file.
P4Merge also offers image comparison, syntax highlighting, and file revision history if you use it in conjunction with the P4 suite.

3. Beyond Compare
Beyond Compare is a powerful and highly configurable file comparison and merge tool. The app maintains a balance between features and performance with an easy-to-use interface.
As with most modern file comparison apps, Beyond Compare can show differences between images or directory structures, as well as files.
The app uses a familiar style to highlight differences by line and character, but you can customize much of its behavior. The color scheme, comparison rules, syntax highlighting, and many more features are all configurable.
Beyond Compare integrates with many third-parties including Dropbox, Google Drive, and S3. You can use these to perform remote file comparisons just as easily as local ones.

4. DeltaWalker
DeltaWalker is a visual diff and merge tool with an inuitive interface that uses just a few menu buttons. It relies more on visual parameters to help you find differences. Out of the box, it supports Office files, Java archives, ZIP, XML, and more. You can even use DeltaWalker to compare two PDF files.
The app integrates with others via a CLI interface, including SourceTree, Visual Studio, and DreamWeaver. The vertical color strip on the right panel shows a summary with a scaled-down visual map of all differences. This is useful for longer files or those with many differences.
You can export your file comparison report as HTML or in the standard patch format. The latter contains the differences between one or more pairs of different files, which is helpful for app developers.

5. Araxis Merge
Araxis Merge is a complex diff and merge tool. It works with many file formats, including text files, Office files, and PDFs. This makes the app suitable for various creative professionals.
Araxis Merge clearly highlights changed lines and uses color-coding to separate typs of change, like changes, insertions, and deletes. Its status bar shows a summary of these changes.
The interface lets you create markers to indicate the lines you've modified. You can add a bookmark to remind yourself or place a comment to note important information. This is great for files that involve many separate changes.
You can also drag and drop blocks of text in either panel to edit the corresponding file. Araxis Merge analyzes changes in the background and saves them, so you can undo the result at any time.
