1. Using Border Options to Draw to Scale in Excel
In the first method, we will show you how to draw to scale in Excel using different kinds of Borders. Go through the steps to do it on your own.
Step-01: Setting Up Row Height & Column Width
Now, we will set up the Row Height and Column Width of the cells to draw to scale in Excel.
Follow the steps given below to do it on your own.
- Firstly, click on the Box in the Left Corner to select all the Rows and Columns of the Excel Worksheet.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Cells >> click on Format >> select Row Height.
- Now, the Row Height box will appear.
- After that, insert 9 as Row height.
- Next, click on OK.
- Again, go to the Home tab >> click on Cells >> click on Format >> select Column Width.
- Next, the Column Width box will appear.
- Then, insert 1 as Column Width.
- After that, click on OK.
Step-02: Drawing Walls to Scale Using Borders in Excel
Now, we will draw a Floor Plan of 25 X 35 sq ft using Borders in Excel. Here, we will use a scale of 1 square unit (Cell) equivalent to 1 square foot.
Go through the steps given below to draw to your own preferred scale in Excel.
- In the beginning, select Cell range B4:Z38.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Borders.
- Next, select More Borders.
- Now, the Format Cells box will open.
- After that, from the Border tab in Style options choose any Border of your choice. Here, we will select the Double line style.
- Then, add this Border to the Bottom, Top, Left, and Right of the Cell range.
- Next, click on OK.
- Now, you will get the External Wall of the Floor Plan.
- After that, select Cell range B4:N14.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Borders >> select More Borders.
- Again, the Format Cells box will appear.
- Now, from the Border tab in Style options choose any Border of your choice. Here, we will select the Double line style.
- Then, add this Border to the Bottom and Right of the Cell range.
- Next, click on OK.
- After that, you will get the walls of a room of 13’ X 11’ in scale.
- Now, to create a gap for the door, select Cell range L14:N14.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Borders >> select More Borders.
- Next, the Format Cells box will open again.
- After that, from the Border tab unselect the Border from Bottom.
- Then, click on OK.
- Thus, you can create a gap between the walls for the door.
Step-03: Using Rectangles Adding Text in the Drawing
In the final step, we will show you how to add Text in the Drawing using Rectangle from Shapes. Follow the steps given below to do it on your own.
- Firstly, go to the Insert tab >> click on Illustrations >> click on Shapes >> select Rectangle.
- Then, insert a Rectangle and Right-click on it.
- After that, select Edit Text.
- Next, type any description you want to add in the Rectangle. Here, we will type Master Bedroom 13’ X 11’ in the Rectangle.
- Now, select the Text.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> select Middle and Center Alignment.
- Next, select the Rectangle.
- After that, go to the Shape Format tab >> click on Theme Styles.
- Then, select any Theme Style of your preference. Here, we will select Colored Outline – Blue, Accent 5.
- Now, you will get a Room drawn in scale with a description in a Rectangle.
- Similarly, draw other rooms in scale and add descriptions to the rooms.
- Thus, you can draw to scale in Excel using different kinds of Borders.

2. Applying Fill Color to Draw to Scale in Excel
Now, we will show you how to draw to scale in Excel using Color. Here, we will use a scale of 1 square unit (Cell) equivalent to 1 square foot. Additionally, we will use walls of 1ft width and add color to them.
Go through the steps given below to do it on your own.
Steps:
- Firstly, set up the Row Height and Column Width of the cells following the same steps shown in Method 1.
- After that, select Cell range B4:AC4.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- Now, select any Fill Color of your choice. Here, we will select Blue, Accent 1, Darker 50%.
- Next, select Cell range B4:B43.
- Then, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- Now, this will automatically select the Fill Color we selected previously.
- After that, select Cell range C43:AC43.
- Again, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- Then, select Cell range AC5:AC42.
- Next, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- Now, you will get the External Wall of the Floor Plan.
- After that, select Cell range P5:P16.
- Next, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- Then, select Cell range C16:L16.
- Again, go to the Home tab >> click on Fill Color.
- After that, you will get the walls of a room of 13’ X 11’ in scale.
- Next, insert a Rectangle and add Text in it following the same steps shown in Method 1.
- Now, you will get a Room drawn in scale with a description in a Rectangle.
- Similarly, draw other rooms in scale and add descriptions to the rooms.
- Thus, you can draw to scale in Excel using different kinds of Borders.
