You only need to grant three permissions to get started with Yumo. Overlay permission lets the characters appear on top of other apps, notification permission keeps them running smoothly in the background, and foreground service permission ensures they stay active while you use your phone. The app is clear about privacy, noting that it follows Google Play policies and doesn't collect, store, or share any personal data.
Once you've granted permissions, you'll find two main categories of characters: Animated and Hanging Characters. Animated characters include Blu (a blue creature that runs), Dog (a pixelated brown pup), Gangster (a walking figure), Banana Man (an energetic yellow character), Girl, Penguin, Zombie, and several more. These characters move across your status bar, making them feel lively rather than static.

Hanging Characters bring a different personality. These cling to different parts of your screen, such as the camera notch, status bar, battery icon, or WiFi indicator (well, depending on where you put them). You'll find Danglo (a robot), Tweeto (a bird), Puffin (an adorable cat suspended by a string), Labubu, SkullPanda, Wingman, the Android mascot, plus more playful options like Judy Hopps and Choco. There are also themed elements like a Saturn Ring and a Black Hole designed specifically for camera notches.
A more standout feature of the app is the custom character creator. You can upload your own images with background-removal tools built right into the app, similar to how you might remove a background in Canva, upload pre-cut PNG files if you already have them, or even hang an emoji from your status bar. Everything you create is stored locally—nothing is uploaded or shared—which is reassuring if you're adding personal photos or original artwork. Position settings offer multiple options. You can have characters walk along the bottom of the screen, enable full-screen Y-position to place them anywhere vertically, or use button controls for manual positioning. Horizontal and vertical position sliders let you place characters with pixel-perfect accuracy.

Hanging characters unlock even more nuance. Motion sensing adds a subtle pendulum effect, making them sway or tilt as you move your device. And a built-in "Test Your Settings" button lets you preview changes in real time, which is invaluable when adjusting animation cadence or movement speed. Instead of flipping between menus and your home screen, you see exactly how your character will behave before locking anything in.

Each companion is marked as "Running" in the Yumo interface, and you can pause them individually without disrupting the rest.
